The woman's sister pleaded guilty earlier this week for her role in the scheme.
Andrea Torres, 56, of Newark, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to harbor certain aliens while her son, Phillip Torres, 27, also of Newark, pleaded guilty to one count of the same crime, according to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office.
The siblings recruited potential spouses who did have U.S. citizenship and paid them a fee in exchange for them entering into the phony marriages with their clients, the office said. The sisters arranged for the “couples” to obtain fake marriage licenses and even arranged and charged their clients for wedding ceremonies and after parties that were staged to make the marriages appear legitimate, authorities said.
