A 45-year-old woman has been charged after police said she attempted to kidnap a 3-year-old from an emergency room waiting room at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Sharie Atkins is facing charges of kidnapping in the second degree for attempting to take the child from her mother and assault in the second degree for the injuries the child sustained during the incident.Hospital staff called the Puyallup Police Department after Atkins reportedly picked up the child and tried to walk out of the hospital. After a struggle with multiple people trying to break the child free from Atkins' grip, hospital security arrived and detained her.
According to court records, the child’s mother told police she was sitting in the waiting room with her friend and her daughter by her side when Atkins sat across from her and started making faces at the little girl. Then moments later, Atkins reportedly picked the girl up, grabbed her purse and started walking towards the exit with the child “wrapped tightly in her arms.” The child’s mother and her friend ran over to stop Atkins as she was fleeing and started screaming for help.
Multiple witnesses were eventually able to pry the child from Atkins’ tight grip, and the child sustained minor injuries and redness on her stomach and back from the incident. When an officer asked how the child felt about the ordeal, “she explained scared and began to tear up.” According to court documents, the incident was also captured on the hospital’s surveillance cameras, which showed Atkins picking up the child, then grabbing her belongings and walking towards the front door at a rapid pace.
Atkins is currently in custody at the Pierce County jail and was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon for a first appearance hearing.
