The charges against Sophia Gastelum-Vera, 26, come nearly three weeks after her son, Kristofer Edgar Ferreyra, died in what investigators suspect was a fatal fentanyl overdose.
The child was less than two weeks shy of his second birthday.Gastelum-Vera was set to be arraigned Thursday morning in a Dublin courthouse. She remains held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail. She also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities suspect Gastelum-Vera used fentanyl the night of Oct. 17 in her bedroom — the same room where her Kristofer and his 4-year-old sibling slept. She awoke on Oct. 18 to find Kristofer unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at a hospital an hour later.
