Wolverine shirtless in X-Men Origins Wolverine and X-Men Days of Future Past
Wolverine’s past was shrouded in mystery until the Origin miniseries finally revealed his childhood origins, but what many fans may not realize is that much of that tragic backstory was inspired by the author’s real-life childhood. Released in 2001, the miniseries attracted a lot of attention at the time due to Logan’s backstory being told after years of buildup, but the true power of the story comes from a very real place.
Written by Paul Jenkins with art by Andy Kubert, Origin revealed that Logan was born James Howlett in the late nineteenth century, the sickly heir to a vast estate in Canada. Young James and his companion Rose befriend a boy named Dog, the son of the abusive groundskeeper Thomas Logan. Although the three children become fast friends, their vastly different social status means that there will always be a barrier between them. For Jenkins, it was a story he pulled directly from his own life:
The backstory of the three children is a large part of what gives Origin its emotional power, so learning that it was based on Jenkins’ real-life experiences makes the story all the more impactful.
