Scientists, academics and engineers give in-principle support for an Illawarra offshore wind farm — but warn operators must meet rigorous standards to protect marine ecosystems.

Researchers and academics are backing a proposal to establish an offshore wind zone off the New South Wales South Coast that has polarised the community.Researchers say their support is contingent on the industry meeting the highest standardsA series of community consultation meetings for the Illawarra project has received a mixed response

The group found offshore wind was the most viable way of ensuring renewable energy grid security for the National Energy Market. In a submission to the federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, the group wrote: "To put this in perspective, just two wind farms of 100 turbines would produce more energy than Eraring, Australia's largest coal-fired power station located near Lake Macquarie in NSW.

The submission also warned offshore wind was currently "under-regulated" and "abdicates too much responsibility to developers", and called for greater oversight. "We can and we should build the infrastructure of the 21st century in this community, so that our children can live in this beautiful place while having an outsized impact on global climate solutions," he wrote.

"What we cannot manage is a world without clean energy, as we move into the future, because climate change will destroy everything," he said.Offshore wind is being touted as a solution to Australia's energy crisis, but some young people say they don't want them.
