Two witnesses testified about seeing a group of Black men engage in a fight with a group of white men, who were later identified as Dutch soldiers, before gunshots were heard. A crime scene specialist presented photos detailing the location of bullet casings. The prosecution also called a forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy on one of the deceased soldiers.
INDIANA POLIS — On Tuesday, the prosecution called two witnesses to the stand who recalled what they saw the night three Dutch soldiers were shot in downtown Indianapolis. A Marion County crime scene specialist also took the stand. The jury got see photos of the crime scene, detailing where several bullet casings were found. One witness told the jury he saw three Black men start randomly pushing a group of Hispanic men.
The witness said he saw one of Black men, whose hair was in dreadlocks, get punched in the face and knocked to the ground."What's your understanding of a strap?" prosecutor Daniel Cicchini asked. Witness:"They got into the vehicle. It goes to make a and drives down the street and then I hear gunshots."
The jury heard testimony from Dr. John Cavanaugh, a forensic pathologist with the Marion County Coroner's Office. He did the autopsy on Poetsema and testified there was no alcohol in toxicology reports and no evidence Poetsema was involved in a fistfight. A 26-year-old member of the Dutch Commando Corps, identified by U.S. authorities as Simmie Poetsema, died after being shot in Indianapolis on Aug. 27.Hall was the on-duty supervisor working security inside the Hampton Inn that night.
