This still image taken from video shows a plume of smoke rises above the plain near Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, where two Navy jets collided at an air show on Sunday.
A retired Air Force pilot who witnessed the crash said all four crew members survived and credited modern ejection systems with saving their lives. Video showed the two aircraft colliding, four crew members ejecting and both planes crashing to the ground.
“The announcer goes, ‘OK folks, we’re stopping the air show,’” said Mark Hasera, a retired Air Force pilot who was attending the air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base. Hasera said investigators will examine everything from weather conditions to possible mechanical problems.
“You can’t say pilot error because you really have to find out what circumstances caused those two airplanes to come together,” he said. “The ejection seats worked just like they’re advertised. They got the crew out of the aircraft very quickly during the accident,” Hasera said. Hasera said incidents like this are rare and that both pilots and ground crews train extensively for emergencies.
“Not only are the people in the air and the air crew highly trained, but people on the ground are trained to handle these kinds of accidents,” he said.
