William Chase Johnson is charged with capital murder for the 2019 death of Lowndes County’s sheriff) - With a jury now seated, the prosecution and defense delivered their opening statements Tuesday morning in the capital murder trial of William Chase Johnson . The defendant is accused of shooting to death Lowndes County Sheriff John ‘Big John’ Williams on the night of Nov. 23, 2019.
The state told jurors that the sheriff received complaints about a crowd of people playing loud music at a Hayneville gas station. When he arrived on the scene, he identified himself as the sheriff and started to break up the crowd.Prosecutors say Williams identified himself as the sheriff to Johnson’s friend, who was in a truck in front of Johnson’s vehicle, and told him to turn down the music.
The defense told the jury that Johnson retreated to his truck where the sheriff then followed. That’s where the defense claims the sheriff pinned Johnson down on the front seat of his truck and was choking him. At that point, the defense says their client shot the sheriff in self defense.Witnesses began taking the stand Tuesday afternoon. Two witnesses who were in the parking lot when the shooting happened testified. One said he could not recall if Williams said he was the sheriff.
