Thursday, April 28, 2022 - A ceremony in the Old School Baptist Church on Broad Street, honors Friday Truehart, who was enslaved in Hopewell at the age of 13 by Rev. Oliver Hart who became pastor at Old School Baptist Church.

When she removed the orange construction cone covering the Witness Stone on the sidewalk, Patricia True Payne bowed and held her folded hands to her face in a gesture of prayer. Applause rang out and after a few moments, emerging from the silence of her own thoughts, Payne straightened back up and pronounced in a hushed voice, “Thank you so much. It’s beautiful!”

“I have maintained the goal of developing information literacy and assisting young people to develop the skills of critical thinking in their evaluation of primary sources,’’ she said. “I cannot exaggerate the achievements of my cousins, Elaine Buck and Beverly Mills.’ they have truly developed a level of research and critical thinking that they might not have ever imagined they would have the ability to achieve,” she added.
