A witness to the fatal shooting of Lowndes County Sheriff ‘Big John’ Williams and a law enforcement officer who help process the scene for evidence took the stand Wednesday in the capital murder trial of William Chase Johnson.

A large crowd gathered in a Hayneville gas station parking lot witnesses authorities take William Chase Johnson into custody for the death of Lowndes County Sheriff 'Big John' Williams. The witness testified that the sheriff responded, “Son, get back in your truck, I’m the sheriff.” He then testified that he heard a gunshot and saw the sheriff fall. The witness also testified that he never saw Williams put his hands on Johnson, despite another witness testifying Tuesday that the sheriff and Johnson were tussling in Johnson’s truck before the fatal gunshot.
