NEW ORLEANS — Rams coach Sean McVay hadn’t received an update from his medical team, but he was nearby when star receiver Cooper Kupp rolled into the team’s sideline in agony while holding his right ankle during the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
The loss of Kupp impacted the Rams in several ways, including the three phases of the team on the field. He’s the beloved 2017 third-round pick who earned his captaincy and lucrative salary the right way. He went from being the savvy, underrated wideout to a breakout superstar last season and one of the catalysts for the Rams’ Super Bowl title. But a championship ring and an Offensive Player of the Year award didn’t stop Kupp from contributing as a blocker and occasionally on special teams.
The Rams haven’t played complementary football for most of the season, but maybe they’ll do it for Kupp on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints at the Caesars Superdome, where the 2018 Rams won the NFC title without Kupp, who tore his ACL that season. “There’s still a lot of football to be played. The reality is we’re not where we want to be. That’s reality. But last I checked, we still have a bunch of Sundays to play and if we win out, I’m sure we’ll go to the playoffs. That’s how I think in my mind. I don’t think that’s unrealistic.”
In order for the Rams’ defense to hold it down for Kupp, they’ll need to end their three-game drought without a takeaway. The Rams only have eight takeaways this season, with seven coming in the first two games, a disappointing statistic for a talented defense that features Ramsey, Donald and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner.
