I may have missed out on some messy-looking toasts and personal shrimp cocktail cups, but I made it through stain-free and drink in hand, which to me spells cocktail hour success. Your holiday celebration is not a wedding, but the same snack rules apply. First of all you must have them: Guests might be arriving with empty stomachs, and yourneeds somewhere to land. And second, ensure that most snacks can be eaten easily with just one hand—no scooping, dipping, or cleanup involved. This is as much for the eater as it is for you, the host; two-handed party snacks are the reason you might find half-empty glasses on your bookshelves, windowsills, and bathroom counters the next morning. If snacking is as easy as popping sweet and savory stuffed dates in your mouth, no one will be forced to abandon a bev. These stuffed dates in particular are cute and fancy-feeling but take all of 10 minutes to put together. The filling is a mix of creamyand finely chopped Calabrian salami, which provides a savory, porky note with a bit of heat as well. Buying the thinly sliced stuff means you only have to run your knife through the rounds a few times to get very tiny pieces, which disappear into the cheese and flavor every bite.
