The space agency’s concerns appear to be in conflict with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s recent predictions that a new Starship and repairs to the company’s Boca Chica launch pad could be ready to as early as this month and that he planned to attempt five launches by year’s end. During Wednesday’s meeting, Free said NASA is involved in the FAA investigation. He noted that he had met with, the FAA’s deputy associate administrator of commercial space transportation, just before the meeting.
“SpaceX has not submitted a final mishap investigation report to the FAA for review and approval nor has it requested a modification to its license to add flights,” he said. “SpaceX also must implement all corrective actions that are yet to be identified as part of its ongoing mishap investigation.” Save RGV, an environmental group in the Rio Grande Valley joined the Carrizo Comecrudo Nation of Texas, an indigenous group, and others filed a federal lawsuit on May 1 that seeks a new environmental impact statement, a lengthy process that could delay testing and launches for years.
