Rutgers athletics is in the market for a new apparel partner. Its biggest stars have shown a clear preference.
The university’s athletic department sent out requests for proposal to multiple apparel companies on October 1st as its agreement with Adidas officially ended, a Rutgers official told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday.
After operating on what was essentially a handshake agreement for the past 16 months, the agreement has ended and the school is back on the market. The school official would not say whether Adidas is among the companies it sent an RFP to. The search for a new apparel partner comes weeks before the start of the most anticipated season in Rutgers basketball history, highlighted by two projected NBA lottery picks in. In the early days of their tenure in Piscataway, the star duo sported a competing brand from the previous partner on their feet.Harper signed a deal with Nike in May; it is unclear if Bailey has a deal with the apparel company.
According to a letter of intent obtained by NJ Advance Media via an open public records request, the original agreement between Rutgers and Adidas called for “exclusive athlete and staff use of Adidas products when engaged in athletic related activities included but not limited to: recruiting, training, traveling, competition.”
