Comment: With right technology and incentives, refineries are ready to go green

Appalachian State UniversityWhen people stop to think about what it will take to reach a low carbon future, they might be forgiven for assuming that the path has already been laid out before us. From wind farms and solar arrays to massive fleets of electric vehicles, the story of America’s energy transition sometimes seems to have already been written, with little left to do but watch the pieces fall into place.

Our transportation sector offers a prime example. Behind the headlines, the most recent annual forecast published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts that the volume of gasoline and diesel consumed in the United States will drop less than 2 percent by 2050.While the adoption of alternative-fueled vehicles is indeed accelerating, it turns out they are not likely to comprise the majority of light- and heavy-duty vehicles until after 2050.

If we’re actually serious about cutting greenhouse gas emissions over the coming years — and we must be if we are to realize the carbon-neutral economy of the future — it’s essential that both public and private sector decarbonization efforts address an industrial sector that will remain a critical piece of the American economy for the foreseeable future.

This is precisely the sort of endeavor which the Department of Energy is well practiced at facilitating. From electricity generation to the production of cement, the Energy Department has quietly blazed a trail of decarbonization for multiple industrial sectors. Populated by world-class scientists with access to one-of-a-kind laboratories, the agency’s portfolio is geared toward facilitating technological advancements that sustain our economic growth while moving towards decarbonization.
