Consider the ripple effect of Wednesday’s news: With Ohtani staying in Anaheim, at least for now, the Angels remain irrelevant. Ohtani plays out the season and signs elsewhere, maybe even an hour up Interstate 5, and all the Angels are left with is a draft choice and fond memories.Meanwhile, with Ohtani off the table, the Rangers go after someone else’s ace instead. The Mets might be shopping, too.
Neither Verlander nor Scherzer would cost you as much as Ohtani, and neither is necessarily a rental. Scherzer has a $43 million player option for next year. Verlander is signed for the same amount through 2024 with a vesting option for ‘25., if at all in ‘24, the Rangers need another ace until his return. Paying $43 million for a season of Scherzer or Verlander is a small price to pay for the shine either would put on the rotation.
