Birmingham’s city council recently approved the $1.1 million purchase of a section of inactive railroad in western Jefferson County, moving the region one step closer to a comprehensive trail system.
When completed, the system will consist of a 750-mile network of trails, parks, bike lanes, and sidewalks planned throughout Jefferson County.
After it is redeveloped, the currently unused rail corridor, about three miles in length, will form nearly half of a 7.5-mile Rails to Trails system. The system will connect residents in that part of the county to the Jefferson County Department of Health’s Western Health Clinic and the Bus Rapid Transit station at the CrossPlex, according to Anna Massa Pires, Red Rock Trail System and development coordinator for Birmingham’s Freshwater Land Trust , which is consulting on the project.
