With privacy board and police at odds over surveillance, San Diego City Hall must step in [Opinion]
But board chair Ike Anyanetu thinks it’s premature for the board to take the step of recommending the use of the technologies to the council. A draft memo by the board that Anyanetu emailed to an editorial writer faults the department for not providing “critical information” needed to assess vendors’ privacy and security practices, in particular those involving AI-enabled technology.
In a response to an editorial writer’s questions, SDPD provided a 14-page internal memo dated Wednesday that addresses some of the privacy board’s issues and questions the validity of several of the board’s contentions. It said the department had cooperated with information requests from the board but was hampered by the fact that final decisions were still pending on some vendor contracts.
If they believe this is a problem, Mayor Todd Gloria and the City Council should act immediately to make TRUST more workable. Without such fixes, a contentious relationship looms between the privacy board and the department over how much input the board has in decisions the department makes in implementing both the measure and technologies.
