The new iPhone 15 is capable of creating 3D video for Apple’s forthcoming virtual-reality headset.
When Apple launched its new iPhone 15 this week, the most talked about new feature was not something that will make it any money.
Across the board, mobile phone sales are in steep decline, and while Apple has managed to avoid the worst of it, it hasn’t been immune. Sales of all Apple’s computers and tablets fell heavily in the quarter, too. IPad sales were down 20 per cent, or $US1.4 billion, and Mac sales were down 7 per cent, or $US540 million, from the year prior. It was only Apple’s services business that saved the company from much heavier losses. That business hit a record high of $US21.2 billion, up 8 per cent, or $US1.6 billion, from the 2022 quarter. That’s 26 per cent of Apple’s total sales.
Still, stock in Apple fell again after the Wednesday launch of the iPhone 15, by 1.7 per cent, after analysts described the launch as “disappointing”, given the lack of exciting new features in the phone. That’s less than 1 per cent of the roughly 1.2 billion phones sold last year, and it doesn’t augur well for Apple’s ultra-expensive Vision Pro, or even for the cheaper, more consumer-oriented versions that are expected to follow that release.
