CLEVELAND – The ink was not yet put to paper, let alone dry. But the 81-year-old Dallas Cowboys owner who’d just negotiated the richest deal in NFL history was ready to talk about what it meant. “I hope Dak is our quarterback for the rest of my time,” Jerry Jones said Sunday afternoon. A few hours later, the 31-year-old quarter-billionaire who’d just picked apart the Cleveland Browns wondered aloud if a four-year extension was long enough to keep him in Dallas that long.
The same year Watson signed his deal, he was suspended 11 games for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. He reached undisclosed financial settlements with more than 20 women who’d accused him of sexual harassment and/or sexual assault. As if the Browns’ enriching of a person with that kind of track record wasn’t grotesque enough, it turned out to be a horrendous football investment, too.
