Houston coach Kelvin Sampson would love to cut down the nets at NRG Stadium on April 3, just as he did with grandson Kylen on March 2 at Fertitta Center in celebration of the Cougars' regular-season AAC title.FORT WORTH — Every March, 68 teams in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament begin a journey that has become known as the “Road to the Final Four.”Take a left on Scott Street. A right on Old Spanish Trail. A left on Kirby Drive.

Being a No. 1 seed offers no guarantee that the Cougars will be among the four teams that advance to the Final Four, which will be held April 1 and 3. While only one No. 1 seed has ever lost in the opening round, winning four consecutive games to reach the national semifinals comes with challenges and the need to avoid a few bracket-busting moments.

“We never bring it up, never talk about it,” Sampson said. “If we think about what we’re asked, we’re going to lose.”New York University and City College of New York didn't have to do much to get to Madison Square Garden, which hosted the Final Four from 1943-48 and in 1950. Only eight teams made the NCAA Tournament back then, so just one victory was required to make the national semifinals. CCNY won the whole thing in 1950.

Another factor that has made it rare for a school to play in a hometown Final Four is the absence of a legitimate contender in the NCAA’s rotation of host sites, which in recent years has included New Orleans, Atlanta, San Antonio, Arlington, Detroit, Minneapolis, Seattle and St. Louis. Kansas won the 1988 title in Kansas City, Mo., about a 40-mile drive from its Lawrence campus, and Duke reached the 1994 national championship game in Charlotte, about a two-hour drive from Durham, N.C.
