The departure of Matt Kean, and the imminent resignation of Dominic Perrottet, is good news for the Minns government.

For a time after last year’s election loss, former Liberal premier Dominic Perrottet and his treasurer and deputy leader Matt Kean toyed with getting the band back together. The young blokes, barely 40 when they found themselves thrust into opposition for the first time in their political careers, had unfinished business.

In a snap press conference to announce his retirement from state politics, Kean said he was going to the private sector and not pursuing a political career in Canberra. The latter was never going to be an option.when Sydney was choking under a cloud of orange smoke as the Black Summer bushfires sparked, became a climate warrior and renewable energy evangelist. At the same time, his staunch support for the transition to renewables has been a lightning rod for his conservative base.

Kean’s Liberal branch enemies remain in Fletcher’s patch, and he would not have a chance of unseating the former minister. Kean has not confirmed his next job, but he will turn up working in the world of renewables.
