Brown, through his achievements and activism, his intelligence and accusations of violence, has both inspired and angered. For that, he has been a subject of fascination, which is why so many have wanted to tell his story.
When Sports Illustrated’s Steve Rushin set out to writefor the 40th anniversary of SI in 1994, he chose Brown to speak for the modern athlete.
You can’t tell full versions of the half-century evolution in any of those prominent areas of society without Brown. You could use him as a lens for 50 years of change, and plenty have. And they should continue to. If Brown hadn’t been born in 1936, someone along the way would have conjured up a character like him.
“He has the physical tools, but his intellect, that’s one thing I felt we really wanted to convey in this film,” Lee said in 2002. “Far too often with Black athletes people don’t acknowledge intellect. ... Imagine if LeBron James, instead of returning to the Cavaliers in 2014 after his stint in Miami, had retired. And instead of these last nine years of basketball in Cleveland and Los Angeles, James had competed against Chris Evans and The Rock for action movie roles, and then had centered himself in the major political and social causes of the last decade.
