The board agreed last week to begin a search for Harrell’s replacement after he announced plans to retire after months of tumult stemming from the. He has said on social media that he expected to stay on the job “throughout the year until a new superintendent can be named.” The statement Friday said Harrell “will be reassigned to the position of superintendent emeritus as of November 1st to enjoy life, which has been patiently waiting for him” but would be available for Patterson to “learn the operations” of the district.
“He will fulfill the duties of that position until his retirement, effective August 31, 2023,” the statement said.Harrell led the district through the stormy aftermath of the Robb Elementary massacre, routinely berated at meetings by family members of those killed and their supporters.
