‘The last two weeks have been devastating,’ said 28-year-old pianist Dmytro Choni. ‘But I tried to just focus on the music.’

In past years, the Cliburn held screening auditions in multiple cities, including some abroad. This time, they’re all in Fort Worth, between March 6 and 12. Of 72 pianists selected for live auditions, from 388 applicants from 51 countries, Choni is the only Ukrainian. Fifteen of the pianists are Russian born, with eight living in Moscow.
