With ‘extremely rare’ exhumation in Kwethluk, Matushka Olga moves closer to Russian Orthodox sainthood

On Saturday, Matushka Olga took one step closer to sainthood when her grave was unburied and her remains transferred to a church in Kwethluk. The clergy carry the Holy Relics of Olinka Arrsamquq Michael, known as Matushka Olga, from the cemetery to the Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas on Saturday, Nov. 16, where her relics would be transferred to a new reliquary.

Faithful from the village of Kwethluk and all around Alaska gather around the grave of Olinka Arrsamquq Michael, known as Matushka Olga, in anticipation of the uncovering of her Holy Relics . Finally, diggers hit the casket, which had decayed over the years but was intact enough to be lifted by a group of clergy and taken to Kwethluk’s church, the bishop said. There, Olga’s remains were transferred to a new casket, built by nuns in California and decorated with salmonberries.
