Jones, who starred at Duke for two seasons before the Spurs selected him in the second round of the 2020 NBA draft, said he texted Krzyzewski after the game. Murray did not make the trip to Denver and it’s uncertain whether he will be back in the lineup when the Spurs play the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday in Jones’ hometown of Minneapolis.
The Spurs are 2-6 with Jones in the starting lineup, with the wins coming over Portland on Friday and Saturday. “He’s had a fast growth from his first year to his second year,” Spurs forward Keita Bates-Diop said of Jones. “He’s dealt with some injuries and COVID and stuff, too, but he’s growing, especially in the last probably 10 or 15 games — a lot.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said after Sunday’s game that Murray had “zero energy” because he had “not been eating.”
