A little more than 24 hours before the opening of the NBA’s free agency period, the Spurs reached a deal Wednesday to trade Murray to the Hawks for Danilo Gallinari and a trove of future first-round draft picks.
With any luck, the Spurs would be in position to add more youth next summer in the form of Victor Wembanyama, the 18-year-old French big man considered the league’s surest-fire No. 1 overall pick since at least Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015. With two seasons remaining on his contract, Murray is in line for a maximum deal starting at around $40 million per season beginning in the summer of 2024.It is a figure typically used on franchise players, and a price tag the Spurs apparently were unsure about paying. Instead, the team chose to move Murray for maximum draft assets while his trade value was at its peak.
Walker is expected to thoroughly test the market. Though paths remain for him to return to the Spurs, many NBA observers anticipate Walker will wear a different uniform next season.
