With COVID omicron variant raging, Van Drew demands Fauci be fired

Rep. Jeff Van Drew was the most recent House Republican to call for the resignation of the infectious disease specialist.

Van Drew said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, “has been wrong time and time again” and should be fired.

Van Drew’s comments came amid a surge of COVID-19 infections due to the omicron variant. New Jersey on WednesdaySeveral other Republicans, including House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy of California, also have called on Fauci to step down.“Dr. Fauci is an extraordinary public servant, as are the whole team of public health care professionals in the federal government, across state and local governments,” said Jeff Zients, White House coronavirus response coordinator, at a briefing Wednesday.

Fauci has been the focus of criticism as federal efforts to require vaccinations or mask mandates have met with resistance from Republican officials. Van Drew said states should have the freedom to decide how to fight the virus without “overbearing, one-size-fits-all mandates” from Washington.according to the Mayo Clinic
