But with her new essay collection, Black Friend: Essays, which hit stands on Tuesday, October 17, Ziwe is going there in an entirely new way. In Black Friend: Essays, Ziwe who is decisively in the driver’s seat on her Showtime show as host, interviewer, and editor—lets go of the steering wheel and lets her audience in for, perhaps, the first time in her career.
It’s like the connective tissue is there for me, but I recognize it’s not there for people who aren’t in my brain, which is to say everyone. It just allowed me to present myself and my thoughts in an honest, true way. Was there a particular essay that was hardest to write, or was the most difficult? All of them were very hard to write. Writing is hard. When writers are like, “Oh, writing is easy.” No. Maybe writing is easy, but the editing was really hard.
