Joe Musgrove and teammates wearing SDSU jerseys: 'We’re all fired up. It’s just exciting. I can’t wait for (Saturday)'
“She was kind of the reason I enjoyed watching games,” he said.
Musgrove was at a game earlier in the basketball season at Viejas Arena when former Aztecs head coach Steve Fisher introduced himself. Fisher gave Musgrove his phone number and throughout spring, the decorated coach would text Musgrove to let him know where the team was headed and lend support to Musgrove’s season.
“I was like, kind of shocked,” said Musgrove, smiling. “ walked over like he was, you know, excited to meet me. He kind of had the presentation that he was a little bit starstruck and I was looking at him the same way. We’re both kind of looking at each other, the awkward Spider-Man pointing at each other moment. It was really cool. That was a special one for me.”
Musgrove had initially committed to San Diego State while at Grossmont High School, after the late Tony Gwynn met with him personally to let him know he wanted him on his team. He never ended up attending, as he was drafted higher than expected but still thinks of SDSU as his adopted alma mater.Bogaerts, Machado and anyone else filing into Petco Park at 2:30 p.m. can watch Saturday’s 3:09 p.m. tip-off on the videoboard.
Musgrove, however, will have to watch from Peoria, Ariz. He’s expected to face live hitters and reach about 75 pitches as he progresses toward his first start of the season after breaking his toe during spring training. But after his game, he plans to watch“I know these guys are motivated,” Musgrove said. “They’re fired up for that game as well as the city of San Diego, so I’m super excited as a fan.
