With the influx of a top-ranked freshman class and the departures of McKenzie Forbes, Kayla Padilla and Kaitlyn Davis, Watkins will be tested as a leader

USC guard JuJu Watkins looks on during the second half in the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament at Moda Center on April 01, 2024 in Portland, Oregon. LOS ANGELES — On Monday, as USC freshman JuJu Watkins trudged to a final postgame microphone with freshly dried tears rimming her eyes, McKenzie Forbes offered her one final piece of wisdom in the last game they’d ever play together.“If I was a coach – would be my worst nightmare.

“Just coming up short, that adds a lot of fuel to the fire for the next couple years,” Watkins acknowledged postgame, fire burning within puffy-red eyes. “I’m just excited to go back home and get in the gym now. I’m really focused on learning from this season as a whole, things I can improve on.” “She’s going to have to take on some different things, right?” Gottlieb said postgame. “Now it’s – team, leadership, things that aren’t basketball-related. I’m excited for her to really walk into everything that’s coming for her.”

“That was an emphasis that Kennedy wanted, was to be a part of the growth process and an emphasis to being one of the main players on the team as well, and of course playing together,” Delus said. “That was what JuJu had discussed, and what Lindsay had discussed, and what she had discussed, is all of them playing together.”
