DOTHAN, Ala. - The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce shared updates on innovation and economic development at the Wiregrass Progress Report . Dean Mitchell with HudsonAlpha Wiregrass outlined new developments, including pilot programs for entrepreneurs, new partnerships and the Wiregrass Innovation Center .
Partnerships like the ag technology and trials grant will pair bio-stimulant companies, like Chonex, with local farmers to test ag-tech products on several acres of peanuts. Mitchell said these partnerships are a major step toward encouraging innovation in the area while helping farmers boost their yields. “The entrepreneurs, they need collaboration. They have these great ideas, but they need on-farm results, on-farm data that can help them validate their product,” Mitchell said. “That entrepreneur growth, that provides local jobs, could turn into a very large local project for our community. Again, that’s the vision that we’re trying to do.” Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker said new businesses are moving into downtown, big projects like a new headquarters for Construction Partners Incorporated are underway and new industry is opening at the Houston County Industrial Park. Parker said new additions like these are not possible without investing in water and sewer, something he hopes to see more of. “Some people don’t get too excited about water or sewer expansion, but it’s a big deal if you want to grow jobs and grow your community,” Parker said. “So, good projects there that we receive state funding through the Houston County and City of Dothan, and our legislative delegation to address some gaps in our infrastructure.
