The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for dozens of counties in Pennsylvania as a storm is expected to bring snow and freezing rain to the state. The advisory is in effect from Wednesday night to Thursday morning and includes a number of counties in south-central Pennsylvania. Forecasters predict less than an inch of snow and up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation in some areas. Hazardous driving conditions are expected, and the PA Turnpike has issued travel restrictions.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for dozens of counties in Pennsylvania ahead of a storm expected to bring snow and freezing rain to many parts of the state. The advisory, which includes Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, York, Perry, Franklin, Mifflin and Juniata Counties, goes into effect at 10 p.m. Wednesday and will last until noon Thursday, the NWS said. The south-central region of Pennsylvania should get less than an inch of snow by 7 a.m.

Thursday, the NWS predicts. Freezing rain is expected to hit the area Wednesday night, with up to a quarter-inch accumulating in some parts. Snow should start before any freezing rain falls, forecasters said. The current forecast for Harrisburg and Lancaster lists snow mainly after 1 p.m., while cities further south, including Gettysburg and York, will have snow starting between 7 and 10 a.m. Forecasters are calling for snow on Wednesday with temperatures in the low 30s before a “wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain overspreads the region” on Wednesday night. By Thursday afternoon the freezing rain should taper off as temperatures jump into the 40s, the NWS said. All snow, freezing rain and sleet should turn to rain by 10 a.m. Thursday in Harrisburg, according to the NWS. Harrisburg, Gettysburg, Lancaster and surrounding areas are predicted to see under 1 inch of snow, but will see as much as a quarter-inch of ice, forecasters said. Current weather models are forecasting between a hundredth of an inch and a tenth of an inch of ice in Harrisburg and Lancaster, but between a tenth of an inch and a quarter of an inch in Gettysburg.Warren, McKean, Potter, Elk, Cameron, Clinton, Centre, Huntingdon, Tioga, Lycoming, Sullivan, Lycoming, Union, Snyder, Montour, Northumberland, Columbia and Schuylkill counties are part of the weather advisory as well. A stretch of municipalities in western Pennsylvania, including Somerset, Johnstown and surrounding areas, should see the most ice/freezing rain, according to forecasters. Those areas should see between 1 and 2 inches of snow and between a quarter-inch and half-inch of ice by Thursday morning. The southwestern region was listed to see “moderate impacts” from the winter weather, with hazardous driving conditions and infrastructure closures/disruptions. No parts of the state were listed in the “major” or “extreme” impacts. Erie and nearby municipalities in northwest Pennsylvania are not predicted to see much snow, but will still see up to a quarter-inch of ice, the NWS said.PA Turnpike I-70/76 from the New Stanton exit to the Carlisle exit.
