Massive waves, shorebreak fatalities, and widespread harbor damage mark the aftermath of a powerful winter storm.
A powerful winter storm lashed the California coast on Monday, generating waves that reached estimates of 20-30 feet, with some reports exceeding 50 feet. While surf conditions at local big-wave spots proved rideable in the 15-20 foot range, the storm's ferocity resulted in at least three fatalities in the Monterey Bay area due to dangerous shorebreak.
Although the swell subsided on Tuesday and Wednesday, a Hazardous Seas and Gale Warning was issued by NOAA for Thursday, predicting 20-foot seas that would gradually decrease to 15 feet over the weekend. The storm's impact on Santa Cruz Harbor was significant, with capsized boats, floating debris, broken docks, and other damaged vessels. Local fishing activities have been suspended until conditions stabilize, a process that may take a week or more
