Most areas of New Jersey remain under a winter weather advisory, but the warning areas could get hit with up to 6 inches of snow.

Most of the state is expected to get 4 inches of fresh snow by the start of Friday’s morning commute, but forecasters say some areas could get as much as a half-foot because of heavy bands of snow falling at a rapid rate.

Although it remains unknown where the heaviest bands of snow will form, the weather service believes the best chance is in an area southeast of the Interstate 95 corridor. Light snow is expected to start falling, mainly in western sections of the Garden State, between 10 p.m. and midnight Thursday, and shortly after midnight in other parts of the state. Most of the snow from this storm is likely to fall between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. Friday, with snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour possible before most drivers hit the roads, the National Weather Service said.

This map from the National Weather Service shows the general timing of when the latest snowstorm will start in eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
