As snow continues to fall in parts of the Chicago area, a winter storm warning has been issued for the city and some suburbs.
Pete Sack has the latest on Sunday’s snowfall, and a heads-up about frigid cold returning to the area As snow continues to fall in parts of the Chicago area, a winter storm warning has been issued for the city and some suburbs.
According to the National Weather Service, the winter storm warning will remain in effect until 4 p.m. for all of Cook County, as lake-enhanced snow is expected to hammer the area Sunday morning and afternoon.Snow bands off the lake could generate up to one inch of snow per hour, with the heaviest totals expected closer to the lakeshore, according to forecast models. Additional accumulations of 2-to-5 inches of snow are expected in the Chicago area before those lake-effect bands move into northwest Indiana. Some parts of Chicago have already received six inches of snow this weekend, meaning that total accumulations of 5-to-12 inches are possible in some locations. Elsewhere, a winter weather advisory remains in effect until Sunday afternoon, with 1-to-2 inches of additional snowfall possible as the remnants of a storm system slowly push their way out of the region. Forecast models indicate that the snow should shift into northwest Indiana by the afternoon, with some lake-enhancement possible in Lake and Porter counties. After that snow moves out, temperatures are expected to plummet, with wind chills dropping to 20-to-30 degrees below zero by Monday morning, according to forecast models. A cold weather advisory has been issued for the entire Chicago area, and will take effect at midnight.
