A winter storm is expected to bring a mix of freezing rain, snow, sleet, and ice to New York City, creating potentially hazardous road conditions for Thursday morning commuters. While the storm is predicted to move out quickly by Thursday, another storm could impact the region over the weekend.

A developing winter storm is forecast to bring a mix of freezing rain, snow, sleet, and ice to New York City, potentially creating a slippery and hazardous Thursday morning commute. Computer models indicate the storm will develop across the Plains on Wednesday, intensifying as it sweeps eastward across the United States. As the system moves east, a strong southerly jet stream will usher in warm, moisture-laden air across the eastern part of the country.

This will lead to the formation of a warm front, separating subfreezing air to the north from record-breaking warmth to the south. The concern arises because the warm air will advance above a thin layer of subfreezing air near the ground. This setup will likely result in a widespread area of impactful freezing rain across the region. According to the FOX Forecast Center, northward from the NYC area, the cold air will be sufficiently deep for snow to be a factor during the onset of winter weather. Cities like New York City could experience snowfall during the middle of Thursday morning's commute. While this could disrupt road conditions, the FOX Forecast Center anticipates that warm air will eventually move in, transforming the snow into freezing rain or plain rain. Any remaining snow is expected to melt nearly completely. FOX 5 NY's Mike Woods predicts approximately 1 to 3 inches of snow for most of the NYC area, North Jersey, and all of Connecticut. Eastern parts of Long Island, as well as central and South Jersey, are likely to receive a coating to 1 inch of snow. The NOAA NWS Weather Prediction Center warns of precipitation, primarily a mix of freezing rain and sleet, impacting an area stretching from the Midwest to the northern Mid-Atlantic, starting Wednesday and continuing through Thursday. The NWS Mount Holly, however, cautions that the forecast remains highly uncertain regarding precise precipitation types and anticipated amounts. Expected impacts may change as updates become available. The system is projected to move out quickly by Thursday, leaving mainly dry conditions behind on Thursday night and Friday. However, another winter storm could potentially affect many of these same areas over the weekend.
