Millions of Americans are facing heavy snow likely to hit on Christmas as winter storms lash the United States.
Winter weather alerts in place across the U.S. reveal which states are expected to get hit by snow on Christmas. The warnings come as millions of Americans are expected to travel this week for the Christmas holiday.
AAA projects that 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday period, which typically runs from December 20 to January 1. Snow could complicate travel, delay or cancel flights, and create hazardous road conditions for motorists driving to see friends or family for the holiday. The weather advisories aim to alert people of the expected impacts. Much of the U.S. will be experiencing above-average temperatures on Christmas Day, making a White Christmas unlikely. However, California, Utah, Oregon and Alaska are expecting heavy snow. A map created by Newsweek shows which states are expecting winter-storm impacts on Christmas. On Tuesday, several alerts were in place for the Northeast as well. Although none of the winter weather warnings in place for the Northeast mention a storm persisting through Thursday, the National Weather Service said light snow was possible. “Moreover, a developing front over eastern Canada will advance to near the Northeast by Christmas morning, producing light snow over Northern New England,“ the NWS said in a Tuesday forecast. However, any snow heavy enough to cause travel disruptions will likely have moved out of the area, NWS Lead Meteorologist Mike Kistner told Newsweek. As for the more significant winter storms, travel could become impossible. “Travel and recreation could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches,“ NWS Reno, Nevada, said in a winter storm warning in place for its California forecast region. “Snow levels will lower from 5500 to 6500 feet Tuesday night and Wednesday to 4500 to 5500 feet by Christmas Day. Heavy rain Tuesday night and Wednesday could lead to ponding of water on roads and minor flood impacts.“ The Hanford, California, forecast office warned of as much as 8 feet of snow in high-elevation areas and said if people must travel, they should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency. Elsewhere in the U.S., the warmest Christmas on record is possible for millions, AccuWeather reported. “Close to two dozen states, from parts of the Rockies to portions of the Appalachians, northward through much of the Plains and part of the Midwest, are forecast to experience temperatures that are 15-30 degrees above the historical average by Christmas Day,“ AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said in a report. “At this level, the warmth will be comparable to late April or early May.“
