WITH LATEST UPDATES: Winter Storm Day 2 -- Snow picking up in intensity this afternoon. This one's a marathon, not a sprint.
CLEVELAND — The second day of the winter storm has arrived on Thursday. This is a long-duration event with impacts continuing to be felt through Friday. Rain has slowly transitioned to snow—covering roads with a slippery coating of ice and snow.
By early Thursday afternoon, the air should be cold enough for snow across most of Northern Ohio. Snow, heavy at times, will likely be the dominant precipitation from Thursday afternoon and evening with significant accumulations of 8 to 12 inches of total snow possible from the south shore of Lake Erie to as far south as Youngstown to near Akron and Mansfield, falling through Friday 7 a.m.
Snowfall so far was close to what we expected in the 1 to 3 inch range. The sleet line has stalled a little farther north over Stark County. So no snow there. But they should catch up quickly this afternoon as the second wave of this storm moves in. Snow should pick up in intensity this afternoon as the second low pressure rides along the Ohio River through this evening. Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour are possible in spots today. This is when the real accumulations begin.
