Bucky Barnes embraces enchanted magic and a new role as leader of the Arcane Avengers in the returning Mangaverse, while also starring in the mainstream Avengers: Armageddon series.
A shocking redesign sees Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier adopt a radical new look while leading a surprising Avengers roster in Marvel's Mangaverse. Known for his cybernetic arm and assassin training, the former Winter Soldier now embraces an enchanted prosthetic, drawing on magic to combat an apocalyptic threat.
Debuting in 1940 and killed off during Captain America's 1960s resurgence, Bucky was rebooted in 2004 as the Winter Soldier-a brainwashed Soviet asset transformed in the final days of WWII. After Steve Rogers broke his programming, Bucky reclaimed his heroic legacy. Bolstered by Sebastian Stan's MCU portrayal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thunderbolts, alongside acclaimed recent comics, Bucky Barnes has become a stalwart Marvel hero, with a shapeshifting arm that can become a shield, a gun, and more.
That makes his turn to magic especially startling as Marvel unveils him as the new leader of the Arcane Avengers. Marvel's Mangaverse is returning to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of this unique imprint and reality. Since fans last visited Earth-2301, much has changed: magic has risen as the dominant force, eradicating advanced technology. Marvel Mangaverse: Arcane Avengers #1, from writer Ashley Allen and artist Mirka Andolfo, presents a world of mystical threats.
In this Mangaverse, Bucky Barnes is "cursed" to fight alongside a surprising roster, wielding a wooden arm dotted with mysterious metal capsules. The Winter Soldier is dissatisfied with his status and seeks to escape the team. The issue's summary reveals: Cursed to defeat and imprison demonic yokai alongside teammates Bloodline and Wiccan, Bucky looks for an opportunity to free himself from his captor's control.
As a new wave of yokai incursion strains the team's resources, Bucky plots his escape-but the sudden reappearance of his childhood friend Hawkeye throws his plans into disarray. The issue, on sale September 16, will also introduce Mangaverse versions of Blade's daughter Bloodline and Young Avengers' Hawkeye and Wiccan. The tone is dark, with the team forced to hunt demons.
The Mangaverse's return is a major event for fans of Marvel's manga imprint, especially because it reinvents characters like Miles Morales, X-23 and Winter Soldier in this style-characters who either did not exist or were not in their current forms during the original imprint. While Bucky is transformed in the Mangaverse, he also stars in the mainstream series Avengers: Armageddon.
With the Red Hulk attempting world domination and Steve Rogers hospitalized, the first issue sees Bucky join the Avengers to strike back. A private moment between Bucky and Namor underscores that while the Avengers fight as Earth's Mightiest Heroes, they are also seeking to avenge Steve under the banner of his WWII Invaders team-of which both were members.
Marvel has teased that following Avengers: Armageddon, a new roster of low-powered heroes will become "Earth's Mightiest Survivors," hinting that the attack team may not survive and could face doom. However, Bucky and Namor's alignment with the Invaders might save them; perhaps that team will also be resurrected in the aftermath, explaining their absence from the upcoming lineup.
It is an excellent time to be a Winter Soldier fan, as Bucky Barnes receives a long-overdue Mangaverse makeover while headlining Marvel's most vital series of the year. With his MCU return later in 2026 via Avengers: Doomsday, the Winter Soldier faces a hellish 2026-meaning Bucky Barnes fans will have more of his adventures to enjoy. Marvel Mangaverse: Arcane Avengers #1 releases September 16, while Avengers: Armageddon #1 is available now
