Rochester, NY (WHAM) - A significant shift to a winter weather pattern is expected for the Great Lakes and New England regions. Temperatures are expected to drop well below normal for the remainder of the week and into the weekend, with highs in the teens and 20s. The cold weather is expected to last for at least a week.

Rochester , NY (WHAM) - A true Winter pattern has finally emerged for the Great Lakes and New England. This will be quite a change of pace from the air that we had early last week when temperatures were in the 40s.A deep trough of low pressure in the upper atmosphere has developed and will likely hang around through the upcoming weekend. As a result, we can expect well below normal temperatures each day this week with some days running 10 to 15 degrees below normal.

The high temperature each day for the rest of this week and this weekend will be in the teens or 20s for Rochester. Our current stretch of days with high temperatures at 30 degrees or less is at 3 days, but it looks like we'll add at least 7 more days onto the streak by early next week. The last time Rochester had over a week in a row with the high temperature at or below 30 degrees was in January 2023. We had 8 straight days with a high at 30 degrees or lower during that stretch. Here's a look at some of the longer stretches recently with a high temperature at or below 30 for Rochester. Each date below is the end date for each cold stretch with the number of days listed in the black box on the right. You're probably wondering if the cold air will create any large amount of snow for WNY. That doesn't appear to be the case at this time, but we'll have near daily chances for some lake effect snow near Rochester through Thursday. Lake Ontario is still in the upper 30s and the large temperature difference between the cold air and the lake surface will certainly produce some lake effect snow. Due to an unfavorable wind direction and fairly dry air above the lake, the snow potential will stay fairly limited each day with no more than a trace to an inch of snow for most spots. The snow potential will fade late Thursday into the weekend as high pressure moves back into the region
