Local homelessness agencies are working to accomodate an increase in need for shelter space as temperatures are expected to plunge.
With temperatures expected to plummet at the end of the week, multiple cold-weather shelters are open in the Harrisburg area for those without homes — but organizers are concerned there’s not enough capacity to meet an increasing need.
“We are seeing a real increase in what we call chronically homeless folks,” said Deb Ritchey of the Capital Area Coalition on Homelessness, and “we are trying to figure out what to do about the overflow of folks,” if need spikes during the cold snap.Downtown Daily Bread, 234 South Street : check-in opens at 7 p.m. and closes at 8 p.m.; check-out at 7 a.m. with breakfast available at the DDB Soup Kitchen until 8 a.m.
The Downtown Daily Bread shelter, with space for around 35 people, is hitting capacity, Ritchey said. The CCU locations have also been close to their fill of around 25, said CCU director Darrel Reinford. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 201 West Louther Street : check-in opens at 8:30 p.. and closes at 9:30 p.m.; check-out at 7:30 a.m.The Community CARES facility at 50 West Penn St. also provides winter clothing and other supplies during daytime hours, according to director Beth Kempf.
