SAN DIEGO — The Rangers began the weekend by stunning the baseball world with a $185 million deal for Jacob deGrom. It reverberated so profoundly at the...
GM Chris Young said the team would “reassess” after signing Jacob deGrom. Perhaps the reassessment involves a deal with SP Carlos Rodon as well?
Here are things the Rangers must consider as they hunker down in their suite overlooking San Diego Bay and Coronado Island:at the top of the rotation, but it could still use some depth in the middle ahead of Jake Odorizzi, acquired from Atlanta, and likely depth options of Dane Dunning, Glenn Otto and Cole Ragans.
It might make more sense to step down a notch to the next tier, which includes Chris Bassitt, Nathan Eovaldi, Jameson Taillon, Sean Manaea and Michael Wacha. Of note here, Bassitt and Eovaldi both received qualifying offers from their previous clubs, which would force a signing team to relinquish a draft pick. The Rangers gave up two last year in signing Corey Seager and Marcus Semien and are giving up another for deGrom.
While there is still work to do on the pitching front, the additions of deGrom, Pérez and Odorizzi give the organization a chance to turn their attention elsewhere, at least temporarily, if the opportunity presents itself. There is a market for outfielder Mitch Haniger, to whom the Rangers have been connected.
