While much of the area remains dry, snow is expected in northern and western New England. The region will continue to experience brisk conditions into the weekend with a potential for ocean-effect snow showers.

The first week of 2025 marks a clear return to winter conditions across Boston and all of New England . A cold pattern moves in on the second day of the new year, accompanied by gusty winds, dropping temperatures and mountain snow showers.For Boston , Thursday's weather story centers on the wind. Numerous gusts of up to 40 mph and isolated gusts up to 50 mph are whipping through the city. This will make temperatures in the upper 30s feel more like the low 20s throughout the day.

These strong winds, driven by a powerful low-pressure system parked over the Canadian Maritimes, are pulling in cold air from the west. Along with the chill, the gusts have the potential to cause isolated power outages and minor tree damage, particularly in elevated or open areas. For those heading outside, be prepared for a biting wind chill.

While Boston and much of southern New England remains dry Thursday, there's some action is centered in northern and western New England. Upslope snow is expected to pile up in the Green Mountains, Berkshires and White Mountains.The winds will remain strong into Friday, though they’ll begin to ease slightly by the evening. Daytime highs will hover near 40, but with wind gusts continuing in the 30 to 40 mph range, it will feel like the lower 20s.
