From Berryessa Gap to Great Bear, with hikes, tastings and a fantastic lunch option

. This time, we’re day tripping to Winters, an hour from San Francisco, so we can hit the trails in the morning and be ready for refreshment when the first tasting rooms open. This area offers trails of every variety, from die-hard hikes to laid-back strolls. Serious hikers will enjoy the Stebbins Cold Canyon Natural Reserve 10 minutes from Winters’ downtown near Lake Berryessa.

If you’re headed to Winters for a bit of YOLO — Yolo County, that is — wine tasting, take a hike first on one of the trails near town or at Stebbins Cold Canyon, pictured. Prefer an easier but still picturesque way to get your steps in? Just below the trestle bridge at the entrance to downtown Winters, you’ll find the paved Putah Creek Nature Park Trail, which feels like you’re in the middle of a forest.
