A steady stream of mourners have poured down the Long Walk to the gates of Windsor Castle to pay their respects

For many locals she was not just the Queen, she was their neighbour. Alice, an 83-year-old who has spent 14 years in Windsor, after leaving Denmark for Britain in the 1970s, said: “It was such an honour to have the Queen as my next-door neighbour.

“When I was in my last year at school in 1953, it was the coronation, and I was head girl so was given a place to stand by Big Ben with some other school children,” she said. At first she refused to believe it was possible. “I thought it was a hoax, I did. I had this telephone call saying that I had been nominated to carry the torch. Julie [her daughter] came home and I said this is a hoax.“Then it got to 9pm and it got the better of me, so I rang the number. It turns out the Queen wasn’t going to be here for the relay, then all of a sudden she was, and they needed someone extra. I was shocked.
