Mr Vanriel says he received benefits before he left the UK and would have still been eligible for all of the benefits when he returned
Vernon Varnriel, 67, claims the Home Office failed to compensate him for a loss of benefits he was entitled to, after he was wrongly denied re-entry into the United Kingdom. In 2006, he went to Jamaica to visit his youngest son but was refused re-entry into the UK when he attempted to return in 2008. The ex-boxer and electrician also won a separate High Court legal challenge against the Home Office for refusing to grant him British citizenship.
Mr Vanriel is being represented by his lawyer Chris Buttler KC, and is now seeking additional compensation for the “loss of access to benefits” during the ten years he was trapped in Jamaica.
