Window strikes kill up to a billion birds a year in the U.S., mostly occurring in low-rise buildings or homes
after striking windows. It’s considered the second leading cause of mortality for wild birds in the country. But while you might imagine tall buildings and skyscrapers as the most deadly, the studies show just the opposite.
Most collisions occur in low-rise buildings or homes like you’d find in many Anchorage neighborhoods. Maggie McCorkey with Anchorage’s Bird Treatment and Learning Center said bird strikes are most common during migration in the spring and fall but the Center also sees cases year-round. “This year our most frequent patients that we’ve seen that have window strikes have been Bohemian waxwings,” she said. “And those big flocks, they come by, and they can, unfortunately, strike windows.” The Alaska Zoo is one place where bird strikes were a problem, according to Education Director Rich Capitan. “We did have window collisions and we had some bird deaths here,” Capitan said. According to Capitan, the zoo solved the problem after getting a grant that allowed them to put up decals on the windows of the Gateway Education Building, where the majority of strikes were happening. “This last spring we saw no mortalities around this building, “Capitan said. “And I attribute that to putting those stickers on them.” The Anchorage Office of Alaska Fish and Game offer protective window stickers free to the public. Generally, it’s a couple of days of turnaround but it could take a couple of weeks depending on their injury.”Wednesday evening led by U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologist Tamera Zeller.
