CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says he's written to Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to request that Eskom is not granted any future exemption from reporting irregular, wasteful and fruitless spending.
Earlier this month, Godongwana withdrew a government gazette declaring Eskom exempt from certain provisions of the Public Finance Management Act after a public outcry.READ: Treasury makes U-turn on Eskom exemption from disclosing wasteful expenditure Winde said the proposal should be rejected, and that South Africans, who have spent majority of this year grappling with power cuts, had a right to transparency.
"When one is trying to fix our systems across South Africa where corruption just seems to be getting worse and worse, we can't find ways of enabling excuses or, in this case, enabling an organisation like Eskom to not disclose irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure," the premier said."I think the worst thing in the world will be to give them extra governance reprieves and allow for further regression.
